Autotelic Tools

Software that makes work feel like flow.

We review tools that strip out the drudgery and leave you with the part of the job worth doing.

Autotelic (adj.): an activity done for its own sake. The word comes from the Greek for "self" and "goal," and it sits at the heart of flow research.

The Standard

Four conditions of flow, twelve checks

Every tool is scored on three checks per flow condition. A tool earns the Autotelic Certified seal with 9 of 12 checks, at least 2 in every condition, and no disqualifiers.

Clear goals

You can see what "done" looks like, and the tool makes decisions you shouldn't have to.

Immediate feedback

Every action shows its result right away. Mistakes surface in the moment, not later at the desk.

Challenge matched to skill

The tedious part is automated. The judgment that takes real expertise stays with you.

Control and focus

It works where you work, owns no engagement tricks, and lets you take your data with you.

StepSnap

For anyone whose team runs on processes nobody ever wrote down

StepSnap is a Chrome extension that turns any browser task into a numbered, screenshot-by-screenshot job aid. Click record, do the task the way you always do, and stop. The guide is already built and ready to export as a PDF.

  • Removes the tedious part of documentation: no writing an SOP, no pasting screenshots into Word.
  • Captures every click, keystroke and page change, with a screenshot after each step.
  • 100% local. Nothing leaves your machine: no account, no cloud service, no data collection.
  • Free under the MIT license. Use it as is, or change it to fit your workflow.

Disclosure: StepSnap is built by ADDStrive, so it is not eligible for the Autotelic Certified seal. The notes here are our design intent, not an independent review.
